Eco Friendly Rustic Teak Furniture launched at Hotel Show
Charles Exports (PVT) Ltd, a fully owned subsidiary of the Informatics Group of Companies, showcased their unique furniture items at the recently concluded Hotel Show 2006. A good 90% of the visitors to the exhibition would have visited the stall, as the furniture displayed had the simplicity and charm of the countryside, but also the elegance to adorn a castle.
All items on display were made from rough branches or timber of teak trees culled from the 500 odd acre teak plantation at Dehiattakandiya, owned by Informatics Agrotech (Pvt) Ltd, another subsidiary of the Informatics Group. The teak is planted in rows of close proximity, which make the teak trees grow tall and straight. Because of the canopy there is less undergrowth thus saving on weeding. However, in order to allow some trees to mature to their full potential, the plantation is thinned by cutting alternate rows. It is this timber that is used to make the rustic furniture. As the plantation is under drip irrigation, new shoots sprout from the cut trees, resulting in a complete eco recycle.
Items on display included a tall wine rack, which could store up to 300 bottles of wine, ideally suited for a hotel. Smaller version for home use is possible. The wine rack can also be used as a separator for a large room, as one side could be used as a bookcase. The dinning table and chairs had the elegance of fitting into a castle of bygone days, but in the modern day could adorn a verandah of a hotel or home.
The three-seater bench, two armchairs, and the coffee table, which go together, would suit the ambiance of a large verandah or even outdoor in the garden. The almirah, single bed and bedside table, which could adorn a cabin bedroom, drew enormous interest. By their rustic appearance they displayed a sense of peace and harmony with nature. The small coffee shop table with the accompanying high stools with backrest, is ideal to be kept anywhere in a home, restaurant or hotel.
With this initial offering, Charles, the designer of this furniture, a French national is prepared to make furniture to suit different settings without deviating from its rustic nature. Until such time as the permanent show room is established at No. 50, Castle Street, Colombo 08, a temporary show room has been set up at the factory site at 163, Madinnagoda Road, Rajagiriya. Customers are requested to call 5322 900/958 or 0722 261377, prior to visiting. |
