Wincor Nixdorf Captures Market Share in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka – 30 December 2006 — With an installed base of more than 550 ATMs, Wincor Nixdorf is very proud of its achievements in Sri Lanka, a market that proved to be very competitive for the last few years. This installed base puts the German-Multinational ATM manufacturer and Banking Solution provider in a leading market position.
As of September 2006, Wincor Nixdorf machines totaled 557 (including concluded deals) across Sri Lanka. Apart from absolute numbers, this figure is highly impressive given that it represents an enormous increase in the number of machines installed from financial year 2004/5 to 2005/6 and reflects the positive development of the banking services in Sri Lanka.
Wincor Nixdorf’s famous triumvirate of market-leading factors: a full range of products and solutions; product innovation; and the company’s commitment to open software platforms have clearly been critical to the success of Wincor Nixdorf on the island, giving it a clear edge over its competitors. Another critical success factor is the superior after sales services provided by Wincor Nixdorf’s Sri Lankan agent, Informatics. “Wincor Nixdorf is delighted to be achieving such success in this important, high growth and exciting market. We believe that our machines feature the perfect combination of highly developed security features, functionality and durability, all critical components in winning the appeal of Sri Lankan banks,” said Ricardos Khoury, Head of Banking Division, Asia Pacific at Wincor Nixdorf.
Khoury added that, as in many developing markets, Sri Lankan FSI (Financial Services Industry) structural change is working in Wincor Nixdorf’s favor. “With double-digit growth in the Banking Sector, the more nimble players are gaining market share. Most institutions have identified the need to adopt counter migration strategies to lower their cost of operations and redeploy staff that are currently engaged in carrying out routine tasks to provide value added services – opening up the need for increased numbers of ATMs,” he commented. “To return the favor, we provided only the best and latest of our technology to the Sri Lankan Banking industry, treating it not as a developing market eager for any product, but as a mature one with sophisticated requirements and knowledgeable decision makers. That is probably the secret ingredient of our success.”
One of Wincor Nixdorf’s leading clients is state-owned major People’s Bank, which currently runs 125 ATMs. This significant number of machines is the product of a successful two decade relationship that People’s Bank and Informatics have enjoyed.
The Bank also runs nearly 1500 Wincor Nixdorf HighPrint 4915 Passbook Printers and was the first to install a security camera solution for ATMs in Sri Lanka using the ATMEye software (which takes three still photos of the transaction). This feature has proven useful in resolving ATM disputes.
Some promising general trends in Sri Lanka offer enormous potential for Wincor Nixdorf. For instance financial institutions and utility companies are beginning to deploy self-service kiosks for non-cash transactions and some banks are seriously considering deploying multi-vendor ATM monitoring solutions. However, with respect to cash transactions, the quality of currency notes in circulation is an area of concern.

Wincor Nixdorf looks forward to partner with Sir Lankan banks to explore new trends and provide innovative solutions to satisfy these demands.
